Photography in the Style of Traditional Chinese Painting

December 7, 2011 by Duncan Brine Leave a Comment

  • Photography in the Style of Traditional Chinese Painting by Don Hong-Oai | Retronaut

Here, photography jumps into, and, dreamily, clarifies traditional Chinese painting. The effect is startling and unique; the images create a median between a far-off reality and a composed ideal.

  • This series of images was brought to my attention by a college friend now living in the northwest.

Tallamy may use images of the Brine Garden in his talk.

Tallamy’s book, “Bringing Nature Home” is fast becoming a classic for our times; it’s the best present you could give yourself or anyone else.

Native Plants, Insects, and Birds with Tallamy– Katonah 2010

March 7, 2010 by Duncan Brine Leave a Comment

“Bringing Nature Home” With Dr. Douglas Tallamy
Wednesday March 10, 7:30 p.m.
Katonah Memorial House, 71 Bedford Road, Katonah

With many of our bird species in serious decline, it is clear that we must change our approach to bird conservation if we hope to keep them in our future. This program sponsored by the Bedford Audubon Society focuses on the role of native plants in the restoration of our landscapes because only natives provide the coevolved relationships required by animals. By supporting a diversity of insect herbivores, native plants provide food for birds, particularly during reproduction. Many people don’t want insects in their yards, but they do want birds. They need to realize that 96 percent of the terrestrial birds in the U.S. rear their young on insects.

Tallamy’s recent NYT Op-ed

April 27, 2015 by Julia Brine Leave a Comment

In a recent Op-ed piece for the New York Times, “The Chickadee’s Guide to Gardening”, Doug Tallamy makes a compelling case for using native plants in our gardens. We follow these guidelines here in the Brine Garden and in our client projects.

“What we plant in our landscapes determines what can live in our landscapes. Controlling what grows in our yards is like playing God. By favoring productive species, we can create life, and by using nonnative plants, we can prevent it…

…Fortunately, more and more gardeners are realizing that their yards offer one of the most empowering conservation options we have, and are sharing their properties with the nature around them.”

— Doug Tallamy
